Longing to Cross the Horizons: Freedom of (Non)Movement

Een gezamenlijke dans door de stad, waar we de relatie tussen de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse koloniale zeehandel en het huidige beperkende migratiebeleid naar voren brengen.
Iedereen is van harte welkom om deel te nemen aan onze gezamenlijke dans tijdens de opening van het Over het IJ festival. Deze performance is door Floor van Leeuwen in samenwerking met Simomo Boujarra gechoreografeerd, en wordt begeleid door live muziek van DJ Cheb Runner, die samen 'Swarm' vormen. We werken samen met het kunstenaarscollectief We Sell Reality om onze vrijheid van beweging en onze vrijheid om stil te staan te benadrukken.
Schepen vertrokken en kwamen aan, grotere werden gebouwd om meer te brengen en weinig achter te laten. Mensen zonnebadend op cruiseschepen die de Middellandse Zee oversteken, terwijl anderen vechten voor hun leven in overvolle rubberboten. Genegeerde noodoproepen voor redding gaan door, evenals de onverschilligheid ten opzichte van verloren levens. Degenen die niet verdronken zijn in het water worden nu verpletterd door bureaucratische procedures op het land. Tussen willekeurige overplaatsingen van het ene vluchtelingenkamp naar het andere en onmenselijke deportatiebevelen wordt de vrijheid van beweging van mensen telkens weer geschonden.
'Longing to Cross the Horizons’ is een eenjarig project, geïnitieerd door Hilda Moucharrafieh binnen het Stadskunstenaarsprogramma van Over het IJ, bestaande uit een tegen-monument op de Y-helling van NDSM, workshops, bijeenkomsten en optredens. Het beoogt eer te betuigen aan vluchtelingen die zijn verdronken in de Middellandse Zee en degenen te ondersteunen die worstelen om te overleven in een staat van onzekerheid. "Freedom of (Non)Movement" is de derde openbare manifestatie binnen dit project. Het tegen-monument op de Y-helling van NDSM is toegankelijk en zal gedurende de festivalperiode geactiveerd worden.
Biografie
Hilda Moucharrafieh (aka The NarrativeCollective) maakt artistieke ingrepen in de openbare ruimte met media die specifiek zijn voor de locatie en voortkomen uit onderzoek. Haar werk vertelt verhalen van mensen die zijn uitgesloten van de dominante narratieven, die niet worden weerspiegeld in de ontworpen ruimtes van de stad, haar pleinen en historische monumenten. Ze werkt vaak samen met vrienden en kunstenaars met politieke en sociale waarden die op één lijn liggen, maar met verschillende ervaringen. Naast haar artistieke praktijk is Hilda ook docent aan het masterprogramma Scenografie aan de Universiteit voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU), maakt ze deel uit van het artistieke team van (A)WAKE in Rotterdam, en is ze de artistiek coördinator van het Unboxed-programma op het Over het IJ Festival.
We Sell Reality is een sociaal rebellabel dat is opgezet als een collectief met een opensource-karakter. Ze zijn een voortvloeisel uit We Are Here, een vluchtelingencollectief dat campagne voert voor mensenrechten en tegen asielbeleid in Nederland. We Sell Reality maakt producten en installaties en creëert performatieve ingrepen in de openbare ruimte. Het team bestaat uit ongeveer 15 sociale ontwerpers. De meeste leden van het collectief zijn hier gekomen als vluchtelingen en bevinden zich in een juridisch niemandsland. De samenstelling van het team kan variëren tijdens verschillende projecten, iedereen die wil meedoen is welkom.
Cheb Runner (Reda Senhaji) is een muzikale wervelwind geworteld in Marokkaanse bodem, die de elektronische muzikale landschappen verkent. Gevoed door beide werelden vertegenwoordigt hij een nieuw geluid van tussenin. Zowel als producer, componist en DJ combineert hij traditionele en eigentijdse elektronische geluiden, variërend van Marokkaanse chaabi en spirituele klanken tot techno en gabber. Hij maakt deel uit van het (A)WAKE-collectief en recentelijk van Not Your Techno Fam. Voor Swarm is Reda DJ en componist.
Simomo Boujarra is een danser, choreograaf en curator met een dansachtergrond in verschillende bewegingsfilosofieën. Simomo houdt ruimte vast en ondersteunt je bij het activeren ervan. Voor Swarm zal hij dansen en 'jouw dansende lichaam' activeren.
Floor van Leeuwen is (mime)choreograaf, onderzoeker en producent. Hen heeft mede het theatercollectief Schwalbe (2008-2020) opgericht, waarmee hen de grootschalige participatieve voorstelling 'Schwalbe is looking for crowds' maakte. In 2021 heeft hen Ræv Rehearsal geïnitieerd met Tools for Action, om een manier te vinden om collectief te dansen tijdens de pandemie. Voor Swarm is Floor producent en choreograaf.
"Longing to Cross the Horizons: The Arrival” - Oktober 2022
A collective dance through the city, highlighting the connections between the history of Dutch colonial sea trade and the current restrictive migration policies.
For the opening of Over het IJ festival, you are warmly invited to join our collective dance through the city, choreographed by Floor van Leeuwen, in collaboration with Simomo Boujarra, and live music by DJ Cheb Runner, who together form ‘Swarm’. Together with the artist collective We Sell Reality, we exercise our freedom of movement and our freedom of non-movement.
Ships departed and arrived, bigger ones are built to bring more and leave little behind. People sunbathing on cruise ships crossing the Mediterranean Sea, while others struggle for life in overcrowded rubber boats. Ignored calls for rescue continue, and so does the indifference to lost lives. The ones who did not drown in the water are now crushed by bureaucratic procedures on land. Between arbitrary transfers from one refugee camp to another and inhumane deportation orders, people’s freedom of movement is violated over and over again.
‘Longing to Cross the Horizons’ is a one-year project initiated by Hilda Moucharrafieh within the Stadskunstenaarprogramma of Over het IJ, consisting of a counter-monument on NDSM’s Y-helling, workshops, gatherings, and performances. It aims to pay tribute to refugees who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, and support those who are struggling for their existence in states of limbo. ‘Freedom of (Non)Movement’ is the third public manifestation within this project. The counter-monument at NDSM’s Y-helling is accessible and will be activated throughout the festival period.

Bio
Hilda Moucharrafieh (aka The NarrativeCollective) makes artistic interventions in public space with mediums that are site-specific and stemming from research. Her work tells stories of people that are excluded from the dominant narratives, which are not reflected in the designed spaces of the city, its public squares and historical monuments. She often collaborates with friends and artists with aligned political and social values yet of different experiences. Along her artistic practice, Hilda is also a tutor at the Scenography masters programme at the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU), she is part of the artistic team at (A)WAKE in Rotterdam, and the artistic coordinator of Unboxed programme at Over het IJ festival.
We Sell Reality is a social rebellion label that is set up as a collective with an open-source character. They are an offspring of We Are Here, a refugee collective that campaigns for human rights and against asylum policies in the Netherlands. We Sell Reality makes products and installations and creates performative interventions in public spaces. The team consists of around 15 social designers. Most members of the collective came here as refugees and are in limbo. The makeup of the team can change throughout various projects, those who would like to join are welcome.
Cheb Runner (Reda Senhaji) is a musical hurricane rooted in Moroccan soil, exploring the electronic musical landscapes. Nurtured by both worlds, he represents a new sound of in-betweenness. Both as producer, composer and DJ he is merging traditional and contemporary electronic sounds together moving from Moroccan chaabi, spiritual sounds to techno and gabber. He is part of the (A)WAKE collective, and recently with Not Your Techno Fam. For Swarm, Reda is DJ and composer.
Simomo Boujarra is a dancer, choreographer and curator with a dance background in various movement philosophies. Simomo holds space and supports you to activate it. For Swarm they will dance and activate ‘your dancing body’.
Floor van Leeuwen is (mime) choreographer, researcher and producer. They co-founded theater collective Schwalbe (2008-2020) with whom they made the large-scale participatory performance ‘Schwalbe is looking for crowds’. In 2021, they initiated Ræv Rehearsal with Tools for Action, finding a way to dance collectively during the pandemic. For Swarm, Floor is producer and choreographer.
