Samen met kunstenaar Haitham Haddad, kunstenaarscollectief We Sell Reality, en vrienden, schildert Hilda Moucharrafieh één zin uit een brief die in 2015 werd gevonden in de broekzak van een verdronken migrant.
“Lieve zee, bedankt voor dat je ons hebt opgenomen zonder visum of paspoort.”
Zijn woorden spoelen nu aan op de Y-helling van de NDSM-werf, waar schepen vroeger te water werden gelaten. De historische erfenis van de scheepsbouw hier gaat deels terug tot aan het dok op Oostenburg, waar ook de VOC haar scheepswerven hield. Veel van de schepen die daar en hier gebouwd werden waren deel van een (neo-)koloniale economie, en dus toen en nu onlosmakelijk verbonden met uitbuiting, onderdrukking en slavernij. Uit dit systeem komen de structuren voort waar vluchtelingen van vluchten naar hier. De schildering wil ook deze laag toevoegen aan het monumentale verhaal van de Y-helling op de NDSMwerf. Ze spreekt van de collectieve pijn van al die vluchtelingen die op zee zijn gestorven terwijl ze vluchtten van zowel oorlog als economische en ecologische crises. De zeeën zijn nog altijd de getuigen van de tragische gevolgen, die net als in dit werk aanspoelen op Europese stranden en steden.

'Longing to Cross the Horizons’ is een eenjarig project, geïnitieerd door Hilda Moucharrafieh binnen het Stadskunstenaarsprogramma van Over het IJ, bestaande uit een tegen-monument op de Y-helling van NDSM, workshops, bijeenkomsten en optredens. Het beoogt eer te betuigen aan vluchtelingen die zijn verdronken in de Middellandse Zee en degenen te ondersteunen die worstelen om te overleven in een staat van onzekerheid.

Biografie
Hilda Moucharrafieh (aka The NarrativeCollective) maakt artistieke ingrepen in de openbare ruimte met media die specifiek zijn voor de locatie en voortkomen uit onderzoek. Haar werk vertelt verhalen van mensen die zijn uitgesloten van de dominante narratieven, die niet worden weerspiegeld in de ontworpen ruimtes van de stad, haar pleinen en historische monumenten. Ze werkt vaak samen met vrienden en kunstenaars met politieke en sociale waarden die op één lijn liggen, maar met verschillende ervaringen. Naast haar artistieke praktijk is Hilda ook docent aan het masterprogramma Scenografie aan de Universiteit voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU), maakt ze deel uit van het artistieke team van (A)WAKE in Rotterdam, en is ze de artistiek coördinator van het Unboxed-programma op het Over het IJ Festival.
We Sell Reality is een sociaal rebellabel dat is opgezet als een collectief met een opensource-karakter. Ze zijn een voortvloeisel uit We Are Here, een vluchtelingencollectief dat campagne voert voor mensenrechten en tegen asielbeleid in Nederland. We Sell Reality maakt producten en installaties en creëert performatieve ingrepen in de openbare ruimte. Het team bestaat uit ongeveer 15 sociale ontwerpers. De meeste leden van het collectief zijn hier gekomen als vluchtelingen en bevinden zich in een juridisch niemandsland. De samenstelling van het team kan variëren tijdens verschillende projecten, iedereen die wil meedoen is welkom.

A counter-monument for refugees who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea.
The floor mural is designed in collaboration with artist Haitham Haddad, artist collective We Sell Reality, and friends, featuring one sentence from a letter which was found in the pocket of a migrant who drowned in 2015.
“Dear sea, thank you for receiving us without a visa or passport.”
His words now wash up at NDSM’s Y-slope, where ships in the past were launched into the water. Many ships that were built here, in the subsequent legacies of the colonial company VOC at Oostenburg, took part in a (neo-)colonial economy, whose past and present are inseparable from exploitation, oppression and slavery. To this day, the seas are still ruled by this system, and they continue to bear witness to their tragic consequences. This floor mural aims to add to the monumental narrative of NDSM’s Y-slope. It echoes a deep, collective suffering of many refugees who lost their lives crossing the sea in the aim of fleeing war zones as well as economic and ecological crises. Just as in this work, these are washing ashore their effects to European coasts and cities.

It aims to pay tribute to refugees who drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, and support those who are struggling for their existence in states of limbo
Bio
Hilda Moucharrafieh (aka The NarrativeCollective) makes artistic interventions in public space with mediums that are site-specific and stemming from research. Her work tells stories of people that are excluded from the dominant narratives, which are not reflected in the designed spaces of the city, its public squares and historical monuments. She often collaborates with friends and artists with aligned political and social values yet of different experiences. Along her artistic practice, Hilda is also a tutor at the Scenography masters programme at the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU), she is part of the artistic team at (A)WAKE in Rotterdam, and the artistic coordinator of Unboxed programme at Over het IJ festival.
We Sell Reality is a social rebellion label that is set up as a collective with an open-source character. They are an offspring of We Are Here, a refugee collective that campaigns for human rights and against asylum policies in the Netherlands. We Sell Reality makes products and installations and creates performative interventions in public spaces. The team consists of around 15 social designers. Most members of the collective came here as refugees and are in limbo. The makeup of the team can change throughout various projects, those who would like to join are welcome.
