Over het IJ LAB: The Listeners

Als kunstenaars voelen ze juist nu de urgentie om de fysieke aanwezigheid te vieren en het gesprek weer op gang te brengen. En luisteren is daarbij cruciaal, luisteren naar onszelf en naar elkaar. Zeker in deze tijd waarin er vaak niet geluisterd wordt. Voor hen is The Listeners een noodzaak, een reactie, een adem, een gebaar van protest en generositeit.

8 t/m 11 februari, NDSM Theater tussen 13.00 en 16.00 uur en tussen 17.00 en 20.00 uur.

Op 12 februari om 16.00 uur delen ze tijdens Sharing Sessions hun ervaringen met het publiek en mogen deelnemers ook hun ervaringen delen.

Pankaj Tiwari is theatermaker en curator uit India. Hij verhuisde in 2019 naar Amsterdam waar hij aan DAS Theatre studeerde. Hij ontwerpt in zijn werk een ervaring voor het publiek en richt zich op het ontwikkelen van plekken waarin kennis en artistieke ontmoetingen worden uitgewisseld. Zo initieerde Pankaj in 2020 Current: a Space, Amsterdam waarin hij middels theater, voedsel en het verbouwen van voedsel een plek voor community building creëerde. Zijn meest recente werk, The Art of Walking (2020) waarin hij van Amsterdam naar Calais liep, werd ondersteund door verschillende productiehuizen en theaters.

Maria Magdalena Kozlowska is zangeres en muziektheater regisseur. Momenteel wordt ze ondersteund door Frascati Producties. Ze onderzoekt in haar werk de emancipatorische mogelijkheden van de stem, vooral in opera. Voor The Listeners werkt ze vanuit het gegeven dat door je stem niet te gebruiken je ruimte geeft aan de expressie van het publiek.

Art is a medium of conversation. Listening is the first step towards it.
Theatre makers Maria Magdalena Kozłowska and Pankaj Tiwari invite the audience for a one-on-one experience as The Listeners.
You can talk, shout, confess, sing, complain, cry or tell a story.
Or just share the silence.
For 5 minutes or an hour. In any language.
Maria Magdalena and Pankaj will create a safe space to share.
They will just listen.

As artists they feel an urgent need to celebrate physical co-presence, as well as restart the conversation. Listening is crucial for this - listening to ourselves, as well as listening to others. Especially in a time in which people don’t listen to each other anymore. For them The Listeners come as a need, a response, a breath, a gesture of protest and generosity

On Saturday February 12 at 16:00 hrs they will share their experiences with the audience and participants are welcome to also share their experiences.

Pankaj Tiwari is a theatre maker and curator from India, who moved to Amsterdam in 2019 where he studied at DAS Theatre. In his work he designs an experience for the audience facilitating spaces for knowledge exchange and artistic interventions. In 2020, Pankaj initiated Current: a Space, Amsterdam, where he uses theatre, food and farming as a medium for community building. His recent work, The Art of Walking (2020), a walk between Amsterdam and Calais(France), has been supported by multiple production houses and theatres.

Maria Magdalena Kozlowska is a singer and a music theatre director, currently supported by Frascati Productions. She researches the emancipatory potential of the singing voice, especially through opera. In the frame of The Listeners she works with the gesture of withholding one’s voice to facilitate the expression of the audience.
