OVER HET IJ FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ITS 25TH EDITION

From the 14th until the 23rd of July we celebrate already our fifth lustre! Over het IJ Festival developed quite a name for itself in the field of theatre on location for the past twenty-five years. In 2017 we challenge up and coming as well as established artists to use the city as their stage. Enjoy theatre on untrodden and very special in- and outdoor locations for ten days in a row: on the banks of het IJ and on many other different locations in Amsterdam-Noord.

Special edition of the Sea Container Programme

The theme of the iconic Sea Container Programme in this jubilee edition is highlights from the past and the location theatre talent of the future. Renowned theatre companies and artists that started their career in a Sea Container or elsewhere on the Over het IJ Festival present the latest generation of performers. The result being a number of unique collaborations of, among others Schweigman&, Young Gangsters, Alexandra Broeder, BOG, Golden Palace and Berg&Bos.

Performances on location.

The first five performances on location of Over het IJ Festival 2017 are booked: The Village by Stichting Nieuwe Helden, Re-enactment of the now by Davey Pieters/Theater Utrecht, Lek by BOT, SOS EARTH -99% Weerbaar by TG Space and Happiness Unlimited by Project Wildeman. All performances are held at surprising locations. On the banks of het IJ, the Palace of Justice and Draka an old factory making low-voltage cables. The complete programme will be announced in May.

Development

The 25th edition of the Over het IJ Festival shows more than ever how artists develop themselves in the programme. There is plenty space for new forms and the development for theatre on location. The festival challenges artists to look closely at the city and the world and to put it in a new perspective. Artists reflect and react on the city, on the subjects and issues at hand there. As a visitor you look with them at the urban environment, hear the stories of the inhabitants, meet new people and discover new places.

Collaboration in developing talent

In 2017 we start a long term collaboration with Frascati Producties to coach the youngest generation of artists in the professional work field. Together we co-produce performances for the urban environment on a yearly basis. This year those are: We beginnen vast by Collectief Walden and La Lucha Libre by La Isla Bonita. In the field of talent development we also collaborate with the Grachtenfestival in the form of the musical theatre walk Variaties. Finally there is another edition of Het Atelier: the joint centre of investigation for theatre on location of Over het IJ Festival and Oerol.

More live-music at the Festival Heart

Together with café and restaurant Pllek we put together a dazzling and inspiring festival heart on the waterfront of the NDSM shipyard. New in 2017 is an extensive programme with live-music. For the nighthawks there are swinging club nights during weekends at the bar and restaurant.  There is no entrance fee for the festival heart and it is easily accessible from Amsterdam Central Station, with a direct ferry to the NDSM shipyard and by bike from the Buikslotermeer ferry.
