In Belgium, there has been increasing tension between the two biggest language groups for decades. Today, 56% of Belgians believe that in the future, it will not be possible to keep the country unified. A quarter of Belgians are even in favor of dividing the country. According to our Flemish-Moroccan screenwriter and lawyer Rachida Lamrabet, the Belgian elections of 2024 may well revolve around this division.

By way of Berlin, Acts of Citizenship takes you along into the future. Imagine that a majority of Flemings vote to split off from Wallonia via a referendum in the next elections and to found a new state, an independent Flanders. And imagine that an ever-growing group of non-ethnic Flemings were to gather at our national borders because they are afraid that due to new laws, there will no longer be a place for them in this new state. There is much discussion about our refugee policy and by the day the issue is becoming more pressing and the crisis worsening. Why is one person allowed to enter the country while another isn’t? Good intentions can have a totally unforeseen effect. But does this mean you should passively stand on the sidelines and wait for decisions from above? When should you take matters into your own hands? In Acts of Citizenship, moving classical sounds from four saxophones mingle with hard-driving live electronics and sharp lyrics to create a layered performance about the danger of good intentions.
