Een menselijk figuur gebaart naar dat wat zich voorbij de horizon bevindt. Een voet van een bouwhek draait om zijn as. Een betonnen barrière wordt geprepareerd achter de schermen. Scenografen Wietske Flederus en Philip Lüschen onderzoeken de potentie van de publieke ruimte door deze te vervreemden. In de voorstelling Anticipating the Thunder, bevragen ze in hoeverre het geconstrueerde stadslandschap als spektakel kan worden opgevoerd. Door de afbakening van hun decor te vervagen door zich de taal van het festivalterrein toe te eigenen en een rationele lezing van de scènes uit te stellen, plaatsen ze de toeschouwer in een vervreemdende situatie. Door het ‘landschap in werking’ verkennen ze alternatieve omgangsvormen met de openbare ruimte en dagen ze degenen die er doorheen navigeren uit om zich te verhouden tot de niet-lineariteit ervan.

A human figure gestures to what is beyond the horizon. A fence foot rotates around its axis. A concrete barrier is under preparation behind the scenes.
Scenographers Wietske Flederus and Philip Lüschen research the multiple selves of public spaces and investigate the potentialities of urban surroundings through practices of defamiliarization. In the ongoing performance Anticipating the Thunder, they question to what extent the constructed urban landscape can be offered up as a spectacle. Blurring the demarcations of their decor by appropriating the language of the festival ground and ‘vagueing’ a rational reading of the scene; they place the spectator in an unruly situation. Through such a ‘landscape in continuous operation’ they explore alternative engagements with public space and challenge those navigating it to cope with its nonlinearity.
