Longing to Cross the Horizons: Further

We would like to invite you to participate in the closing event of “Longing to Cross the Horizons” on Sunday 18th of February at NDSM Theater from 14:00-18:00. As someone who is a visitor of the festival Over het IJ Festival, we feel your presence would be very valuable. We will speak, listen, share, move, draw, drink and eat together.

Under the title “Further” we will build together on the monument-based mural “Longing to cross the horizons”, initiated by Hilda Moucharrafieh. This work has manifested over the past 18 months at the water edge of the Y-helling at NDSM. It was designed in collaboration with the Palestinian artist Haitham Haddad and the Amsterdam-based artist collective We Sell Reality. The floor mural features one sentence from a letter that was found in the pocket of a migrant who drowned in 2015. Translated from Arabic-language, it reads: “Dear sea, thank you for receiving us without visa or passport.”

This work poses questions about how this particular site relates to the status of monuments and migrants, and how we allow each to be present in public space. How can we register the contemporary consequences of colonial legacies within such a monument? Are we a generation constricted to preserving the past, or can we allow ourselves to revise historical monuments with the acquired knowledge of their contemporary legacies?

We willen je graag persoonlijk uitnodigen om mee te doen met het afsluitende evenement van “Longing to Cross the Horizons” op zondag 18 februari in het NDSM Theater, van 14.00 tot 18.00 uur. Wij voelen dat jouw input als bezoeker van Over het IJ Festival, van waarde is tijdens dit evenement. Tijdens dit evenement spreken, luisteren, delen, bewegen, tekenen, eten en drinken we gezamenlijk.

Onder de titel “Further” bouwen we samen door aan de monumentale schildering “Longing to Cross the Horizons”, geïnitieerd door Hilda Moucharrafieh. Deze schildering bevindt zich op de rand van de Y-helling op de NDSM. Het is ontworpen in samenwerking met de Palestijnse kunstenaar Haitham Haddad en collectief We Sell Reality. Op de schildering staat één zin uit een brief die werd gevonden in de zak van een migrant die in 2015 verdronk. Vertaald uit het Arabisch staat er: "Lieve zee, bedankt dat je ons hebt ontvangen zonder visum of paspoort."

Dit werk stelt vragen over hoe deze specifieke locatie zich verhoudt tot de status van monumenten en migranten, en hoe we toestaan dat beide aanwezig zijn in de openbare ruimte. Hoe kunnen we de hedendaagse gevolgen van koloniale erfenissen registreren binnen zo'n monument? Zijn wij een generatie die zich beperkt tot het bewaren van het verleden, of kunnen we onszelf toestaan historische monumenten te herzien met de verworven kennis van hun hedendaagse erfenis?

• Het evenement wordt afgesloten met gezamenlijk eten en drinken, bereid door de leden van Vrouwenbazaar
